Jesse Meintjes, better known for his stage name Mars Baby was born in Woodstock, Cape Town on the 27 March 1997. He moved to the USA when he was 6 years old, living in Maryland before coming back to South Africa to finish high school. It was during the 10 years he spent living in Maryland he found his passion for music, where he picked up the guitar for the first time and joined the choir.
Living abroad exposed Jesse to many different types of music and cultures, which has influenced his sound and approach to making music today.
“I’m influenced by a whole lot, but if I had to pick a few key ones I’d say Kanye, Donald Glover, Bon Iver, D’Angelo, John Mayer, Daniel Caesar, Frank Ocean, Solange, JPEGMAFIA, Nick Hakim, Knxwledge, Sampha & Tyler the Creator. There’s a lot. I also get inspired by my friends, everyday situations, nature and visual art. Locally, some people that influenced me would be Abdullah Ibrahim, Kyle Shepherd, Beatenberg and of course all my crazy talented musician friends” – Mars Baby
When asked about how he came up with his artist persona “Mars Baby”, Jess had the following to say: “I was in a very weird place a year or so ago and Mars Baby was like something that just came to me. It’s difficult to explain. He’s me but also not. Like it’s the name I gave to a part of me that I’ve recently connected with, a form of creative energy. I’m an Aries, I think that’s part of it.”
This multitalented artist is set to bring a whole new sound to the music scene in Africa and across the globe, with his alternative production, smooth vocals and incredible songwriting skills.
“I hope to keep it pushing, keep challenging myself, becoming more ambitious with each project. I just wanna make music I like, and I want it to always be honest. I want to connect with people on that level.”
Mars Baby produces all his music, so you are sure to have a full blown Mars Baby experience when listening to his work. He is currently working on his follow up EP, set to drop in the 4th quarter of 2020.

Song Title: Porcelain Production: Mars Baby Featured Artist: lordkez Release Date: 8th May 2020
“Porcelain is more about a feeling than it is about one person. Drawing on a couple past experiences. It’s an unrequited love song. Like, when you really like someone and they just don’t feel it at the same level as you. You’re just another option to them. And they’re like everything to you so you try to act cool and impress them” – Mars Baby
Official Press Release:
Cape Town-born musician, Mars Baby, has released his first official single, titled ‘Porcelain.’
Real name Jesse Meintjes, the 23 year-old maestro is a triple threat, boasting an arsenal of artistic ability including singing, music production and songwriting, while also cultivating his keen sense for visual arts through film studies.
Inspired by a plethora of artists across multiple genres and musical eras, including ‘Bon Iver, JPEGMAFIA, Daniel Caesar, Beatenburg, MF Doom and Abdullah Ibrahim, among others, it is apparent upon first listen of his notable 2019 debut EP EROS, that his sound does not necessarily satisfy any single genre tropes.
Of his music, Mars Baby says: “I haven’t found a good enough name yet. There are pieces of everything I love in there so, I guess I’ll just go with ‘alternative’ for now because it leaves space for people to listen to my music without any specific expectations.”
The single, a comforting ode to unrequited love, is a culmination of a lived experiences, but also expresses the universal complexities of emotional entanglement.
“It’s about really liking someone, but that person not feeling the same way; you’re just an option to them. So you put up a front and act cool in an attempt to impress them.”
On ‘Porcelain’, Mars Baby enlists the help of friend and label mate lordkez, who is as talented as she is diversely mercurial, artistically speaking. lordkez’s contribution to the song, according to Mars Baby, was a no-brainer because of her silky vocal texture, prolific songwriting ability, and their history making magic together in the booth.
“I met LordKez and her group of dope creative friends about a year ago,” he recollects. “We were always making music together, just for the sake of it. When I was working on my EP EROS, she featured on a song of mine and the chemistry was instant. Since then, we’ve been collaborating a lot and I always really enjoy working with her.”
